Organizing Your Entryway for Back-to-School

Back-to-school season is here, and soon backpacks, lunchboxes and books will be hustled in the back door, along with boots, jackets and scarves (well, we can only hope in East Texas).

Starting off the school year with a freshly organized entryway, foyer, mudroom, or even a dedicated space in your garage will make you feel like you’re one step ahead of the game before homework, sports and holidays begin. Here are a few tips to get you started:

Hang some hooks

If the hooks are there, people will use them. Backpacks, jackets, purses, hats, they can all be hung up and kept off of the floor. Dedicate a spot for your keys nearby and make it easy to grab everything you need on your way out the door.

Contain it

A container for each child to stash schoolbooks, mittens, winter hats, or whatever small items they bring in and out give those items a dedicated spot – and hopefully they’ll get put to use.

Make it pretty with paint

If you’ve been looking for a chance to work a pop of color into your home, this is it. Paint shelving, shoe cubbies, or even the wall in your newly appointed space to separate it from the space around it and give it some personality.

Label things

Dedicate a spot to each child with their name above their hook. Depending on your space, this may be an opportunity for a chore chart, calendar, or just a bulletin area for the family to write messages. If you’ve been dying to use chalkboard paint for something (like us), this is the time!
